An alarming spate of break-ins and property theft across Warwick has left the community and business owners on high alert, with new police data revealing shocking new trends behind the offending.

Statistics from the Queensland Police Service reveal that 161 break-and-enters or thefts have been reported in the Warwick area within the past quarter alone.

This includes 43 reports of unlawful entry, 72 thefts (excluding unlawful entry), 33 property damage offences, and 13 offences under unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

These figures rise to 274 in total within the past six months, almost half of which was accounted for by the 121 thefts recorded within the time period.

Close to a third of those offences recorded within that six-month period were recorded in January this year alone, when the monthly total of 84 more than doubled the average of 33 in the preceding five months.

Police say Warwick thieves have racked up a string of offending so far this year, including a string of break-ins and car thefts at Warwick homes and businesses that racked up thousands of dollars in stolen goods.

The Warwick Golf Club has also reportedly been targeted by vandals at least three times within the past month, with offenders breaking into sheds and driving golf carts around the course before dumping the vehicles in varying states of damage.

It was only earlier this week that Warwick police reported a BMW sedan and Range Rover SUV had been stolen from a Diery St property and were sighted driving erratically or lined up around town in the early hours of the morning.

Warwick Police acting officer-in-charge Cameron Slater said the BMW was found in Toowoomba and the Range Rover more than two hours’ away in Toowoomba.

He urged Warwick residents to make security one of their top priorities as most offenders needed to gain entry to homes to steal car keys and other items.

“We’re just wanting to remind people again to lock their houses, that’s what we’re really struggling with at the moment,” he said.
