Police have released new details of a reported wounding at a major Warwick high school earlier this week.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Palmerin St outside Warwick State High School about 3pm Wednesday, following reports a 12-year-old boy had been cut on the leg with a knife.

A Queensland Ambulance Services spokeswoman said on Wednesday evening that the child was given first aid treatment at the scene.

Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Sergeant Cameron Slater said an argument broke out between the victim and a 13-year-old boy over cake being sliced up and handed out to other students by the older boy.

“One of the kids has hit the cake out of his hands, so the kid with the knife has just thrown it and it’s hit the other kid in the lower leg, which caused a cut,” he said.

“He said he didn’t mean to hit him with the knife.”

Sergeant Slater said the child required several stitches to close the wound.

The incident remains with the Child Protection and Investigation Unit.

Warwick High administration sent a message to parents and caregivers referring to an incident affecting the school community on Wednesday afternoon.

“The school is aware of an incident at the end of the day,” it read.

“All students are safe. We will address this as a whole school tomorrow.”
