Warwick police have launched an investigation into a brazen burglary at a popular service station, which is believed to have left the business thousands of dollars out of pocket.
Offenders targeted the United petrol station on Helene St between 9pm Sunday and 5am Monday, gaining entry to the premises by unknown means and making off with a small safe kept at the back of the store.
Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Sergeant Cameron Slater said initial reports suggested the safe was holding about $6000 in cash at the time.
“We’re still having a look at forensics, CCTV, and that sort of thing,” he said.
The costly theft was reported less than a day after an 18-year-old was violently assaulted outside a busy Warwick pub.
Police were called to The Malt House at the corner of Wood and Guy Sts at about 1am Sunday after reports the Warwick man had been punched in the head repeatedly by another patron.
It is understood the victim was not transported to hospital that night, but later received medical treatment for his injuries.
Sergeant Slater said a 19-year-old Warwick man was currently considered a suspect in the assault, but no charges had yet been laid.
Alleged drink and drug driving offences have also kept police busy throughout the past few days, with another several residents now set to face court.
A Warwick 17-year-old was charged with drug driving after he was allegedly busted behind the wheel with an illicit substance in his system on Bracker Rd at about 11.30pm Saturday.
It was only hours later at about 1am Sunday that a 36-year-old Warwick man was allegedly nabbed on Washpool Rd with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.06.
Police claim a 20-year-old Warwick man was busted drug driving along Wood St on Sunday afternoon, and that a 67-year-old man was then caught driving on Palmerin St with a BAC of 0.055 the following day.
All four residents are expected to appear in Warwick courts in the coming weeks.
