A popular Warwick nursery has been left with extensive damage after a truck ran off the road and ploughed into its premises last week, with police still trying to determine the cause of the shocking incident.

The semi-trailer crashed into the front of Enchanted Garden Nursery on Alexandra Dr just before 7am Friday, with the wreckage closing off one lane of the Cunningham Highway for several hours while the scene was cleared.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Warwick Hospital in a stable condition.

No one was inside the nursery at the time.

Enchanted Garden owner Claire Cunningham said she was eating breakfast in her home at the back of the nursery premises when she heard the collision unfold.

“Like everyone else, I was surprised, I suppose,” she said.

“By the time I got there, a couple of other people had stopped. There were a couple of men going to work and a few different cars, and they helped (the truck driver) and they had actually rung emergency services.

“The damage is quite extensive, there’s quite a lot of damage to that part.”

Mrs Cunningham said the building was used to stock fresh produce, jams and pickles, and garden ornaments and artworks, but it would now remain closed until the damage could be fully assessed and repaired.

“There will be an interruption to that part of the business, but the nursery is still opening and we’ve been serving customers there,” she said.

“I’ve been here 42 years, and this is the first time anything like this is happened, and will hopefully be the only time.

“We have had support from the community and I think we’ve got everything under control, or at least as much as is possible.”

Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Cameron Slater said the investigation was yet to determine the cause of the crash, with mechanical failure and driver error both still considered possibilities.

The incident was only the beginning of a horror day on the roads in Warwick, with a pedestrian struck and killed by a truck on the New England Highway only hours later.
