The Granite Belt could soon have a new addition to its already impressive food and wine trail after Southern Downs Regional Council approved plans for a Brisbane businessman to build an eco friendly, architecturally designed cellar door and short term accommodation.

Meteora Vineyard is the brain child of National Storage founder Andrew Catsoulis and wife Karen.

Mr Catsoulis told this publication his love for the outdoors and the Granite Belt region was the driving force behind the decision to invest in his own vineyard.

The name ‘Meteora’ was a nod to his family’s Greek heritage, referencing the Greek site of granite outcrops in the Meteora region, Mr Catsoulis said.

The vineyard will take up residence in Ballandean and is set to include specialty crafted cellar door, large amphitheatre, as well as three eco friendly cabins.

Standing out from the crowd, the plans have proposed the vineyard will also grow and manufacture estate grown olives, olive oil and locally made honey.

Mr Catsoulis said planting was already underway with the couple electing to follow in the footsteps of the regions great vinegrons in choosing an assortment of strangebird varieties.

“We have nothing but respect for other tourism operators in the region and are working closely with local trades, producers as well as renowned wine growers in the region,” he said.

“What we’re really looking to create is an end to end eco system where we produce wine from grapes we’ve grown ourselves.”

The impressively designed operation is also set to feature guided walks, guided winemaking sessions, as well as helitours from Brisbane out to the site.

Construction is set to go underway in the coming months with the vineyard to be fully operational by mid 2025.
