Calvary Christian College in Mount Louisa charged up the list from 19th last year to 2nd, knocking The Cathedral School down to 6th.

The high-achieving Pimlico State High School had 179 students sit the exam — the most of any school in the Townsville region — with nearly a quarter of them achieving an OP 1 to 5.

Pimlico SHS has been a consistent performer in the OPs in Townsville, rising from 7th in the region and 199th in the state last year to 4th and 109th respectively, kicking Ignatius Park College from its spot.

Principal Joel Buchholz said it was two strong elements of academic and arts that contributed to Pimlico’s continued strong performance.

“One is a strong academic focus, we make it very clear that we are school that is preparing students for a range of pathways but certainly tertiary pathways … and that creates a culture of students that are very focused,” he said.

“Secondly we have a very strong focus around the arts, I think you’ll find that many of the students are involved in music, in drama, in visual arts and also because of the issue of time, the discipline they have around those pursuits they bring that focus to their studies as well

“I think having both an academic focus as well and a layer of arts as well contributes to that culture of excellence.”

The only other state school to make the top ten in the region was Ingham State High School, with five of their 31 OP students scoring an OP 1 to 5.

Another Ingham-based school, Gilroy Santa Maria College, has also made its way into the top ten, up from its number 15 spot last year.

Overall, there has been a 7 per cent decrease in the number of students who sat the OP in the region, from 1343 in 2017 to 1252 last year.

This year’s Year 12 students will be the last Queenslanders to receive an OP ranking, as the ATAR system comes into effect across the state.

In 2018, just under half of Year 12 students received an OP ranking, with a large majority of schools offering a variety of alternative pathways for graduates to enter higher education, or the workforce, including VET qualifications and school-based apprenticeships or training.

A number of Queensland students also received alternative academic pathway options to OP rankings, such as International Baccalaureates.
