Zac Arthur Bowles slaps, headbutts elderly man at Yandina Hotel

A plumbing boss has run from the media after assaulting an elderly man who told off his child for causing a “ruckus” inside a Sunshine Coast pub.

Statistics show alarming elderly assault rates in WA

A father of three downed 12-15 beers before he slapped and headbutted an elderly man at the Yandina Hotel so hard he violently fell off his chair.

Zac Arthur Bowles, 33, was enjoying a meal with his family at the Yandina Hotel on September 3 when he assaulted the 76-year-old man.

Bowles’ children were causing a “ruckus” and according to him, the victim had told the defendant’s daughter to “shut the f--k up”, the Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday, December 7.

Police prosecutor James Allen said the victim was seated at the table when Bowles approached him in an aggressive and threatening manner.

Bowles struck the victim to the head and face area with an open hand in the form of a slap.

He then tried to strike the victim again but this time missed.

“The defendant advanced on the victim and headbutted him in the face causing him to fall backwards in his chair,” Senior Constable Allen said.

“The assault occurred in front of a number of patrons in the hotel and a young child made attempts to intervene.”

The elderly man suffered abrasions and a laceration to the top of his nose.

Solicitor Jacob Pruden told the court his client was a hard working family man who was remorseful for his conduct.

Mr Pruden said Bowles had already consumed over 12 beers before arriving at the pub and this intoxication played a “significant role” in his actions.

“He actually snapped his foot in half and was unable to work for a period of six months,” he said.

Magistrate Richard Lehmann said the 33-year-old’s behaviour was “unacceptable” and pointed out his history of threatening behaviour.

”It occurred in a public place where there were children around,” Mr Lehmann said.

The plumber pleaded guilty to assault of a person over 60 and was given four months’ prison suspended for 12 months.

No conviction was recorded.
