A Nambour mum will spend at least another five months behind bars after she kicked a police officer in the nose and injured another officer using handcuffs.

Tyra Jade Sullivan, 23, was given 10 months’ prison with a parole eligibility date of November 4, 2022, in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday June 28, 2022.

Police prosecutor Lee Allan said Sullivan was arrested at Nambour on a return to prison warrant.

The court heard she was handcuffed and seated in the door area of the police car.

Sullivan then kicked out at one male officer and missed before kicking out again and striking him on the bridge of the nose and forehead with the base of her foot using “some force”.

“At the watch house the defendant has again behaved in a non compliant nature, escalating her behaviour to using handcuffs that were on her to assist in inflicting an injury to another officer’s fingers,” Senior Constable Allan said.

“She stated ‘you deserved it’ to police and showed no remorse for her actions.”

The kick caused immediate pain and a hospital trip for the male officer, while the handcuff injury to the female officer caused soft tissue injuries, the court heard.

Senior Constable Allan said Sullivan had been in custody since May 1 as she was on parole at the time of the police assault from a District Court sentence relating to an attempted robbery.

“For her age the defendant has a significant criminal history with a number of offences of violence,” he told the court.

Defence solicitor Luke Bull said his client was still a young woman and had entered early pleas of guilty to the two counts of serious assault and two counts of obstructing police.

“Her history of violence is there and it’s a relevant consideration,” Mr Bull said.

Mr Bull said Sullivan was from Cherbourg and had a prejudicial upbringing with a limited education and issues with substance abuse.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said her history could easily be described as “diabolical”, “violent” and “recidivist”.

Mr Stjernqvist said Sullivan had shown “no remorse whatsoever”.
