Residents and industrial workers of a green Sunshine Coast suburb could enjoy early morning and late night sessions at a CrossFit gym if a proposal receives approval.

Tide Athletic Pty Ltd lodged an application with Economic Development Queensland to establish a CrossFit and functional training gym in the unit 5 tenancy of 60 Edison Crescent, Baringa.

The 240sq m tenancy is located in an existing complex within Aura Business Park’s low impact industry zone which was completed in April, 2023.

Application documents show it is proposed for the gym to run classes of up to 20 people before 8am and after 4pm on weekdays and weekends, with reduced sizes and private one-on-one sessions during their non-peak hours.

The gym hopes to cater for remote and shift workers as well as parents during off-peak hours whilst keeping the car park relatively free for surrounding businesses.

“As a locally owned and operated business, the applicant will create employment opportunities for local coaches and personal trainers, contributing to economic growth in the community,” documents state.

The gym also intends to “bring the community together, celebrate wellness, and provide a sense of belonging for individuals of all ages and fitness levels” through social events, charity work and competitive CrossFit activities.

If approved, the gym would be about 500m from residential neighbourhoods with a buffer reducing the risk of noise.

Documents state there are no similar facilities in the immediate surrounding areas and there is the World Gym as well as martial arts studios, aerial gymnastics, basketball courts, and rock climbing facilities located further away in the Aura Business Park.

The application mentions addressing issues created by indoor sport businesses within the precinct, particularly in regard to disrupting nearby businesses and taking up parking spaces.

Documents state the “historical context of non-compliant businesses” have been taken into consideration and with a goal to comply with the Plan of Development.

The prospective business has therefore planned to host their bigger classes outside of the operating hours of to avoid obstructing parking for nearby businesses and obtained written permission from the property owner to use the complex’s parking during these times.

Documents show they also hope to advise their members of parking requirements and promote carpooling and cycling through social media and other channels.

The reception and brand apparel and other amenities will take up 60sq m of the premises and the remaining 180sq m will be dedicated for fitness activities.
