Sunshine Coast surfers have paid tribute to the long-time resident of an iconic beach shack that is set to be destroyed to make way for an apartment block.

The Alexandra Headland Malibu Club members gathered for a farewell of Bunya Bunya at 250 Alexandra Pde, Alexandra Headland on Sunday, November 26.

The surfers, gathering for their monthly competition meeting, posed for a photo with the home of Allan ‘Clarkie’ Clarke, before the last beach shack on the road is destroyed to make way for luxury apartments to be developed by NeuBau Group.

Club president Kevin Annetts said it was a “classic moment in Alexandra Headland history”.

“It’s the end of an era for Clarkie, the iconic Bunya Bunya has been home to him for the past 30 plus years,” Mr Annetts said.

“The Alexandra Headland Malibu Club wanted to pay tribute to Clarkie, as he has been a great friend to some of us in the club for many decades.”

Bunya Bunya’s tenant 33 years, Mr Clarke said the house was well-known to the surfers.

“They knew it was not going to be around for the next one, so they all brought their surfboards over stacked them all around the front of the place, and just waved a farewell,” Mr Clarke said.

“Everyone knows the place, it has been here forever.”

Mr Clarke said there have been many memories shared at the home.

“This house has seen some things, if only the walls could talk,” he said.

“I played a lot of rugby and quite often there would be Mad Monday celebrations here while I was at work.

“I’d get a warning, ‘Clarkie, they’ll be on your roof when you go home’.”

While he will miss the view and the short stroll for a morning swim, Mr Clarke hopes he won’t be living too far away from the coastline.

“I will miss this place, but there is no point worry about anything you haven’t got control over,” he added.

“I’m trying to get into a retirement village, I’ll be alright.”

According to NeuBau Group director Tim Reed the decision notice on the development is expected on Tuesday, December 5, with construction due to take place in the first half of 2024.

“There is no need to demolish the property until we are ready to commence construction, this will be in the first half of next year,” he said.

“I can’t see the tenant vacating sooner (than) March 2024.”
