A viral video of cops swooping on a group of young drivers on the Noosa North Shore has surfaced on social media, as police reveal a plan to increase activity for the approaching school holidays.
The video, shared to Tik Tok by user Max Steele (@max.ssteele) on October 29, came amid a large-scale police operation at Teewah Beach in October, police have confirmed.
At the time of publishing, the clip has been viewed more than 1.1 million times.
Holiday hotspot taken over by ‘lunatic’ hoons prompts night driving ban
In the video, three police officers and one park ranger are seen at a beach campsite surrounded by several young drivers, one of which was placed in handcuffs and bent over the bonnet of a car.
“We are not taking any sh-t guys. We are done. Pack everything up,” one officer said to the group.
The Sunshine Coast Daily has contacted the original poster for comment, but it is yet to be confirmed what sparked the arrest.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said no one was charged over the incident.
Noosa Police officer in charge Troy Cavell said all drivers at the scene were breath-tested and cleared, including the P-platers, and no driver left the area without police approval.
It comes after concerns were raised about an apparent increase in the number of young drivers who are often seen or filmed hooning on the beach and have been accused of hosting wild beach parties, overtaking the idyllic holiday hotspot and ruining its reputation.
Tin Can Bay Police officer in charge Sergeant Mick Bazzo did not agree the issue was “out of control”, but said police presence along the popular areas of Teewah and Rainbow Beach would be increased over the Schoolies and Christmas holiday period.
“We have increased our policing numbers for our traffic and good order (public nuisance etc) patrols,” Sergeant Bazzo said.
“There is a big focus, a big push on drink driving and drug driving. We will be enforcing that and there will be a zero tolerance as well.
“Unfortunately we (police) have all been to one too many fatal traffic crashes (at Teewah Beach) ... that’s what we want to try and prevent.”
Campers and witnesses are encouraged to report dangerous driving, hooning and other illegal activity to police and park rangers.
