Queensland CHO urges vaccination rates to increase to curb risk of outbreak

A Covid-19 vaccination hub will reopen at Caloundra in October with the aim to vaccinate up to 2000 people per day.

It comes after thousands of people endured waiting hours at the weekend to receive vaccinations at Birtinya and Nambour.
The hospitals welcomed walk-ins as part of Queensland’s “vaccine blitz”.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service reported wait times of more than four hours on Saturday.

is joining the “vaccine blitz” with walk-ins accepted at the Birtinya and Nambour hospital hubs.

The Sunshine Coast and Nambour hospital vaccination clinics will close when a new hub opens at Caloundra which aims to vaccinate up to 2000 people a day.

From Friday, October 8, Caloundra Indoor Stadium will reopen as a community vaccination hub.

It is understood the Birtinya and Nambour hospital clinics will then close.

“It is more efficient to consolidate smaller vaccination centres into larger sites with more capacity when they become available,” a Queensland Health spokesman said.

“This does not mean less vaccination slots are available.

“As the rollout progresses and we receive more supply, we have progressively closed smaller vaccination sites in favour of large or mass vaccination centres.”

More than 2000 people a day are expected to receive a vaccination at the Caloundra centre, more than double what was provided at existing centres.

The Caloundra facility will open until early December.
