Coolum State School plans on getting its students back into nature by building a mountain bike trail to improve their cycling skills.
The school is just one of many Sunshine Coast schools investing millions of dollars into improving facilities for students in 2022.
With about five million people expected to live in South East Queensland within 20 years, Coast schools are planning now on ways to best manage future growth.
Coolum State School
Principal Anthony Ryan said the school's plan to build a new mountain bike track in 2022 will focus on improving children's cycling skills.
"We have two concept drawings that have involved the students in the designing of the trail," he said.
"Funding has come from the P&C and we have had support from Sunshine Coast Council...who have all been involved in the workshops with students and parents in the design phase."
Mr Ryan said the project will cost between $104,000 and $117,000, depending on which design is selected.
Immanuel Lutheran College
Immanuel Lutheran College business manager Mark McFie said the school had two projects in the works for 2022, including a $6.5 million refurbishment that would completely overhaul the secondary mathematics, design innovation and business departments.
Mr McFie said the projects were about designing indoor and outdoor learning spaces.
“Over the past two years, there has been a steep increase in inquiries and growth at the college as the Sunshine Coast has experienced increased levels of interstate migration,” he said.
“This is contributing somewhat to the pace of development at Immanuel.”
Mr McFie said practical completion of the 10 new classrooms in Banksia and Cycad were due in early February and the new courtyard and civic spaces would be complete by late February.
“Not only are classroom spaces designed with different styles of learning in mind – achieved with flexible furniture – but large outdoor decks have been built to capitalise on Immanuel’s unique location within the Buderim rainforest,” he said.
Immanuel College will also start work between terms 2-4 on a $4-4.5m new performing arts space and four new classrooms in Immanuel’s Primary School.
“The structure was built in 1988 – it was a bicentennial project – and it too will be revitalised as part of our move from traditional to contemporary styles of learning,” Mr McFie said.
“Sound and lighting equipment will be modernised and seating increased from 300 to 350.
“The classrooms upstairs will have the capacity to open for group activities – with soundproof bi-fold glass doors – and a deck which overlooks the main oval will run the length of the building, perfect for indoor as well as outdoor learning.”
Noosaville State School
Principal Michael Hobson said he was looking forward to 2022, with plans for library extension resource room in the works and a new outdoor learning space expected to be built.
Matthew Flinders Anglican College
The college will begin construction on a new design centre will begin in 2022, which will provide students with access to a range of digital and traditional materials to help them with their studies.
The project, which is due for completion in 2024, will feature “interconnected and flexible maker-spaces, art studios, workshops, galleries and robotics arenas”.
Principal Stuart Meade said the precinct would become a hub for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in the Flinders Secondary School.
“Our goal is to build on our college’s reputation for academic excellence while maintaining a clear focus on the wellbeing and potential of each child,” he said.
“To achieve this goal, it is vital that we provide flexible and versatile learning spaces, equipped with modern technology, that enable our students to learn 21st century skills like creativity, collaboration and innovation.”
Beerburrum State School
The Beerburrum State School has a planned upgrade of the B-block and classrooms will be refurbished.
The school also has received funding to upgrade its tennis court in 2022.
Kuluin State School
Principal Corrie Connors said the school would be getting a library extension in 2022.
“This will be a big change for Kuluin,” Ms Connors said.
