A Sunshine Coast mum was crying in court as she was sentenced for choking her own teenage daughter and banging her head on the floor after an argument got out of hand.

The 51-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given 18 months’ prison suspended for an operational period of 18 months in Maroochydore District Court on July 18, 2022.

Crown prosecutor Ellie Bowlam said the mother found out her daughter was at a friend’s house instead of at her father’s and drove to the friend’s house.

The mother was drunk and was angry that her children hadn’t told her that their father was away.

She demanded her daughter get in the car before calling her a “lying b---h”, driving erratically and causing the daughter to be scared.

The pair arrived back at the house and the mother followed her daughter upstairs where she then pushed her daughter about four times.

Ms Bowlam said the mother grabbed her daughter’s hair, forced her to the ground and banged her head against the floor about three times.

“This caused (the daughter) considerable pain ... she screamed at the defendant begging for her to stop and calling out to the housemate,” she said.

The mother then grabbed her throat with both hands and pushed her against the wall, “forcefully” choking her for about 10 to 15 seconds, causing a restriction of breathing.

She managed to get away briefly before her mother grabbed her hair again and pressed the side of the face up against the couch before they were separated by the housemate.

Defence solicitor Anna Smith the argument got “very much out hand” when her client completely lost her temper and snapped.

“It is unlikely to happen again if she maintains the rehabilitative path that she is on,” Ms Smith said.

Ms Smith said her client had been battling mental health issues and was very remorseful for her actions.

The woman pleaded guilty to the domestic violence offences of choking and two counts of common assault that did not end up causing any lasting injuries for the daughter.
