An Alexandra Headland man previously sentenced for the manslaughter of toddler Tyrell Cobb has apologised for his “disgusting” behaviour in court where he yelled abuse at the magistrate.

Matthew Ian Anthony Scown was charged with contempt of court on July 4 became agitated on the video link when Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist refused him bail for charges of fraud, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing, possessing prescription medicine and driving unlicensed.

His previous manslaughter conviction was mentioned briefly during the bail hearing.

Mr Scown yelled “f--k you” several times and also said “you’re a dog” before the video link was cut off in Maroochydore Magistrates Court.

Mr Scown was brought up from the watch house on July 5 and apologised to Mr Stjernqvist for his behaviour.

“I’m coming down off drugs and am extremely apologetic for my behaviour,” Mr Scown said.

“It was absolutely disgusting and it’s no way to carry on in the courtroom so if you can accept my apology today I really do apologise.”

Mr Stjernqvist said he was feeling generous and dropped the contempt charge.

Mr Scown was refused bail due to an unacceptable risk that he could continue to offend after he allegedly stole items, was found with tainted property and used a man’s car without his permission.

Court documents revealed Mr Scown was captured on CCTV on June 26, 2022, driving a car owned by fellow defendant Matthew Spinks without his permission.

Just after 10.30pm on July 23, police found the stolen vehicle parked beneath a unit complex in Maroochydore and were approached by Mr Scown a short time later.

He was detained and found in possession of the car keys, telling police he was merely minding the vehicle for Mr Spinks while he was in custody.

Mr Scown was then allegedly captured on CCTV on June 23 doing a fuel drive off of $70.05 after telling the cashier he had forgotten his wallet.

Police allege in court documents, Mr Scown had also stolen two DKNY t-shirts from TK Maxx, along with being found in possession of Lyrica and a stolen Tommy Hilfiger bag.

Duty lawyer Michael Robinson said his client could be put on reporting conditions to mitigate the risk of him reoffending, but Mr Stjernqvist decided against giving Mr Scown bail.

He is due to appear again on August 8, 2022.
