Maroochydore Roos superstars will look to perform at the elite level after being drafted by the Brisbane Lions in the AFLW.

Two Coast young guns have been selected by the Brisbane Lions during the AFLW virtual draft on Tuesday night.

Maroochydore Roos players Maggie Harmer, 18, and Bella Smith, 17, were selected by the Lions with their opening two picks.

Harmer, who plays as a defender, was selected in round one at pick 18 and Smith, who is a midfielder, was drafted in round two with pick 35.

Harmer said she couldn’t be happier.

“I’m so stoked with it all and putting on our jerseys with the media attention definitely made it seem very real,” she said.

“It’s all a blur right now but it is something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life I think.”

Smith said reaching the AFLW had been a dream of hers since she was young and the opportunity to play for her favourite made it even better.

“It really is amazing and quite a surreal feeling to be honest,” she said.

Former Roo Mikayla Pauga, who transferred to Bond University in 2020, was also selected by the Brisbane Lions at pick number 46.

Smith said “the real hard work” was about to start.

“I look at it as only being halfway there and now the aim is to get a game in first grade,” Smith said.

“It’s time to get into gear now and I’m really looking forward to the next couple of months.”

The players now join former Roos Lily Postlewaite and Belle Dawes who were drafted to the Lions in 2019.
