A Brownlow Medallist and three-time premiership star is getting set to headline a host of ex-AFL talents in their own ‘big dance’ at the AFL Masters National Carnival.
More than 1700 players across 76 teams from all states and territories will descend on the Sunshine Coast’s Maroochydore Sports Complex for the October 1-7 tournament, a day after Brisbane and Collingwood square off in the AFL decider at the MCG.
Former Lions and Western Bulldogs gun Jason Akermanis will be among the standout names lining up at the carnival, which will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

Akermanis, who won three AFL flags with the Lions from 2001-03, will also have an eye on the opposition, as he scouts the top performers for the Australian Masters side.
“I’ve been involved with masters footy for about three or four years for the Morningside Supercats,” Akermanis, 46, said.
“But I haven't been able to play much, as I’ve still been playing senior footy in different competitions against blokes half my age.
“This is my first national carnival, so I’m really looking forward to representing my state and to experience the environment that everyone seems very excited for.
“It’s also a great chance for me to have a look at some players that we want to take to Ireland next year for the International Rules Masters tour, as I’m the coach of the over-40s and 50s.”
KommunityTV will broadcast all 114 matches of the nationals from four ovals across four match days.
It follows our exclusive live stream of last year’s carnival in Adelaide.
Akermanis would be joined in the Queensland squads by ex-AFL players, including Jason Cloke (over-40), Corey Bell (over-50) and Robert Copeland (over-45).
Ex-Lions captain and fellow premiership star Alastair Lynch will also be in attendance and is rumoured to feature for Tasmania when they clash with Queensland on Wednesday.
Queensland AFL Masters president Sam French said he was proud of the growth the competition had recorded in recent years.
“There’s 1782 players attending and 350 of them are women, which is just incredible,” French said.
“This year is our 40th carnival anniversary and the last time it was held on the Sunshine Coast was in 2011, where we had 750 (players) in attendance.”
Matches will be played on October 1, 4, 6 and 7. The on-field action will be accompanied by a series of other contests, such as the longest kick, 100m sprint and tug of war.
“Footy for fun is our motto, as we really encourage everyone that plays that it’s not about the final score,” French said.
“It’s about getting out there and having fun, which is evident through our eldest player who’s 82-years-old and he still goes OK too.
“Some people coming have never played Aussie rules before, some are coming to their 20th carnival and then there’s blokes that have won AFL premierships, such as Akermanis.”
The four-time All-Australian and 2001 Brownlow winner was excited for the coming days.
“It’s such a great opportunity for so many men and women to still get out and have a kick,” Akermanis said.
“You meet a lot of good people and when the sun is shining, you can’t really complain.
“Running out alongside or against some past teammates and opposition will be pretty cool and pretty funny too.”
