Dust off the boots, strap up the joints and pick up the Sherrin – it’s time to start training for the AFL Masters National Carnival.

And if any extra incentive was needed, every match of the 2023 carnival will be live streamed exclusively on KommunityTV in October.

After a successful start last year, KommunityTV and AFL Masters have extended their partnership, announcing a two-year deal which will include every match of the 2023 and 2024 national events.

The 2023 carnival, which will be held in Maroochydore on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast from October 1-7, is already poised to be the biggest nationals yet and registrations only opened a week ago.

AFL Masters general manager, Dr Adrian Raftery, has tipped numbers to swell in 2023 - and for registrations to even include a few former Brownlow Medallists.

“We are expecting the host state to invariably spring a few surprises, but who knows who will rock up," Raftery said. "There tends to be a lot of cloak and dagger with the states not wanting to reveal who is playing.”

Last year’s carnival in Adelaide was a huge success.

While their AFL clubs might not be travelling the best this season, Raftery tipped the veterans of Western Australia to fly the state flag proudly in Queensland.

Perennial powerhouse Victoria is again expected to be strong after winning four of the 13 divisions last year, but with the resurgence of South Australia and WA in the younger age divisions, Raftery tipped that every state had a shot at the medals.

The fastest growing divisions at the Masters involve the women, especially following the successful introduction of the over 40s at last year’s nationals in Adelaide.

Eight of the nine states and territories rolled out women’s teams in 2023, but Raftery said with Northern Territory already expressing their interest in registering a women’s side, that they would have the full gamut this year.

“There will be record numbers of women involved this year, it is insane,” he said. “We started an introductory program for women last year called AFL Masters QuickKick and we had over 2000 participants.

“The flow on from that is we now have registered women playing domestically and wanting to be part of the nationals.”

The coverage of the AFL Masters National Carnival will be exclusive to KommunityTV and will be available to watch on every News Corp Australia masthead across the country.

“I am over the moon to extend the partnership,” Raftery said.

“We had a great introduction last year with 41 matches streamed, but to be able to extend that to all carnival matches this year and next year is great.

“It is a great opportunity to showcase footy for older men and women and hopefully provide inspiration for people wanting to get back into their sport at that age.”

Registrations are still open for the 2023 AFL Masters National Carnival at Maroochydore. Head to http://carnival.masters.afl/ to register your interest.
