Footy season is barely behind us and already the bats are being wielded as another season of top-grade Sunshine Coast cricket gets underway.
The limited-overs formats have kicked off and we’ve sounded out some expert views from some of the game’s brightest personalities on who will be the players to watch this season.
Tewantin-Noosa were crowned back-to-back T20 champions and they currently remain undefeated at the summit and will play Caloundra away from home on October 23.
Both Caboolture and Maroochydore also remain unbeaten after round three and will look to continue their hot run of form this weekend.
We caught up with each club’s spokesman to find out which players will be the ones to watch this season.
Glasshouse (Brett Lunt)
Joel Owen
“Joel is a consistent performer and really enjoys the competitive nature of the game,” he said.
“He’s been able to prove himself in the senior division and definitely has match winning capabilities.”
Jeremy Schultz
“Our captain and leader Jeremy is another one to keep an eye on this season,” he said.
“He’s a seasoned competitor and is still aiming to achieve high level success with the club.”
Maroochydore (Wayne Anderson)
Matt Watson
“Matt’s our keeper and he’s recently been promoted to opening batsman and he’s going great,” he said.
“His skill and precision with the gloves is another major positive and he’s definitely one of the best keepers on the Sunshine Coast.”
Mitch Armstrong
“Mitch is a fast bowler in the senior men’s team at only 16 years of age,” he said.
“He’s just breaking into first grade and is a very exciting prospect.”
Nambour (Rodney Davison)
Steven Ledger
“Ledger was the leading run scorer in the competition last year and is starting to hit some top form again this year,” he said.
“He can dominate any attack on his day and is able to score very quickly.
“His leadership as captain and his ability to win games is massive for us this season.”
Nick Wallace
“Is a left handed batsman and is really capable of making big scores to help lift the team when he is available,” he said.
“He’s still overcoming an illness but when he has played he’s definitely made a difference.
“Already this season he’s proved how vital he is to the team.”
Caloundra (David Saker)
Tom Caine
“Tom is someone who is coming through the top ranks now and someone that has been in the system for a decent amount of time,” he said.
“He’s got lots and lots of talent for a 17-year-old so he’s one to watch and we hope he can make some good progress this year.”
Isaac Cottrell
“Isaac is one we’ve gotten back from the Scorchers and will be very beneficial given he can bat and bowl,” he said.
“He’s had some good experience at a higher level so it’s good to have him back.”
Gympie (Paul Mitchell)
Josh Brady
“Josh is a very good cricketer from every aspect of his game,” he said.
“He bats, he bowls and is very effective in the field.
“He’s got a high cricket sense and a really good feel for the game.”
Brycen Mitchell
“Brycen has only just taken over the captaincy this year and is our opening fast bowler,” he said.
“He bats around six and is only 22-years-old and is a good talent on the field.”
Coolum (Sam Curtis)
Tiaan Scheepers
“Tiaan is our opening bowler and the reason he fits this category is he is pretty aggressive,” he said.
“He fights really hard for every ball and it’s definitely something we need in our team.
Corey Perren
“We got Corey from Nambour during the off-season and so far he’s the top run scorer for us,” he said.
“It’s a bit odd as we pulled him across for his bowling but he’s taken on the batting opportunities he’s received higher up the order.
“He holds that middle order together really well for us and is very inventive when he bats.”
Caboolture (Trevor Oliver)
Preston White
“Preston is a good top order batsman and bowls left arm orthodox,” he said.
“He’s one that returned to our club and is a great team man.”
Glen Batticciotto
“Glen is a left hand batsman and is a prolific run scorer,” he said.
“He’s a former Queensland Bulls player and is just an overall class player.”
Tewantin-Noosa (Jacob Dennien)
Cody Pyne
“Cody is our wicketkeeper and has really improved this year by taking his game to another level,” he said.
“He’s been putting in a lot of work on his keeping and his batting skills and they’ve really shown.”
Tom Stewart
“Tom is opening our bowling this year and he’s really filled into that role really well,” he said.
“His taken some big wickets already and is really mixing it with the big boys this year.”
