A new junior cricket club has been launched on the Sunshine Coast through the emerging suburb of Nirimba.

Nirimba Cricket Club, which is based at the new $6.5m Nirimba Sports Complex, is only four weeks old and is on the hunt for junior cricketers to join club ranks.

Nirimba Cricket Club head Andrew Middleton said he was excited for the growing club and suburb of Aura, at Caloundra South.

“The formation of the club will happen further down the track but I’m just as excited now as I will be when there’s 60,000 people living in the community,” he said.

“The facility is great and sport is a great way of connecting people in the local community whether you're a player, a parent, a volunteer or a spectator.”

The club will start with the Cricket Blast format aimed at five to 10 year olds.

Mr Middleton said beginning with the junior level was a great way to help build the club from the ground up.

“Given the older juniors and senior competitions have already started, us coming in at the introduction level really helps us establish a solid base to work with,” he said.

“The conventional side of the Coast cricket season is already organised so our aim is to arrange some different formats of cricket to help us get our foot in the door from a different direction.

“It’s all early days but our plan through the juniors gives us a solid foundation where the club can really grow with the community.”

Aura is expected to have 50,000 residents by 2050 and the sporting complex features four rugby league fields, four netball courts and two cricket fields.

Mr Middleton said he couldn't wait for junior sessions to get underway.

“I’m close to 60 now, I still play cricket and other sports and I’m a massive believer that community comes from sport,” he said.

“I’m actually moving from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast and they haven't even built my house yet but I’ve already joined a cricket club which is a bit funny.

“The facilities are great, there’s a great vision that Stockland has for the area and there’s already been some positive feedback to our vision.”

Cricket Blast sessions will be held at Nirimba later this month for junior blasters (aged five to seven) and master blasters (aged seven to 10).
