Low scores and high tension welcomed one-day cricket back to Sunshine Coast Division 1 fixtures as Caboolture headed home from Caloundra before lunch, while white-knuckled spectators endured a last-over Showgrounds finish between Nambour and Coolum.

Henzell Oval looked ripe for runs from a rebuilt batting line-up that added Brendan Kelly to a list producing 189 runs from 20 overs at Maroochydore the week before.

Sent in to bat, the Lighthouses livened the scoreboard with twelve runs from the second over.

Preston White caught Rod Gibbs off Connor Corlet for 1/20, and their bowling combination dominated the innings while the former Nudgee College junior bowled his 10 over spell.

Corlet claimed the whole top order in his 5/34, backed by the miserly White, whose 3/8 from half a dozen overs took his season wicket tally to 16 at just 4.4 runs each.

Jaxon Eyles helped White remove the tail as Caloundra fell for 61, the Lighthouses lowest score since 2015/16, and a target the Snakes reached in the 15th over.

Jackson Simpson fell for 31 with the scores level, leaving White’s boundary to end the game before the normal innings break.

Nambour and Coolum produced their second OD cliffhanger, following the Sharks’ denial of the Cutters’ 222 run chase to be three short in their last OD encounter.

The visitors’ 207 posed a threat after an innocuous 6/84 was raised to 7/ 176.

Ex-Nambour Cutters player Corey Perren hit a career best unbeaten 51 on the weekend.
Ex-Nambour Cutters player Corey Perren hit a career best unbeaten 51 on the weekend.

64 on debut by Andrew Irvine combined with ex-Cutter Corey Perren’s career best unbeaten 51.

The home side’s reply looked pain free, as Nick Wallace took control to allow the luxury of shoulder-wounded captain Steve Ledger batting at six, and as he brought up his century at 1/168 in the 38th over, the Cutters’ tail would have been mentally siting back for the ride.

But the Sharks’ opening bowler Tim Scheepers thought otherwise.

Starting the 39th over the chase was comfortable at 1/168, then crashed by the 46th to 6/190 after four Scheepers dismissals, most importantly Wallace for 110.

When Ledger was out to begin the 47th over, pads were being fitted all over the dressing room.

Sam Eiby and Liam Baker, with a combined career 94 runs from 19 innings to this season’s start, now had 22 deliveries to make 15 runs, a task reduced to just three as the penultimate over yielded five singles.

The first boundary of the partnership ended the match as Eiby hit Perren’s second delivery to the boundary and victory.

Tewantin-Noosa’s bowling strength was highlighted when the Thunder shattered Gympie for just 29 at Manthie Oval after setting the Gold a chase of 191.

The visitors’ middle order had revived their innings from a shaky 3/38, with Blake Steel best adding 53 for a respectable challenge.

Josh Brady opened the reply with youngster Saif Malek, who was caught behind off Scott Aufderheide at 1/12.

They were followed by Kurt Beutel and Murray McClone for 3/16, but it was Tom Stewart at the other end who captured the prize dismissal of Brady for a 4/16 scoreline.

From there it was a procession for Ben Laughlin, who snapped up 4 wickets in his three overs for six runs, while Aufderheide returned to complete a 5/9 haul when the Gold resistance completely petered out by the 16th over.

Maroochydore registered a comprehensive win over Glasshouse as the Swans’ 179, with good starts for most of the top order, proved far too much for the home batting.

The reply was flattered by a 152 total, boosted from 7/61 by late runs from Joel Owen and Ben Fleiter, denying the visitors a bonus point.

Luke McInnes removed the Rangers’ middle order in his 5/15, as only Dan Cahill of the recognised batsmen got a start.

The early weakness is a worry for the home side, which has already seen a premature end to its T20 season after missing the semi-finals.
