Sunshine Coast cricket Division 1 side Tewantin-Noosa enter Twenty20 finals on top

Tewantin-Noosa has continued its unbeaten run in the SCCA Division 1 with its sixth win, defeating Caboolture at Read Park, and will enter the semi-finals in top position regardless of the outcomes in the last round of the fixtures.

Caboolture’s batting has been impressive as the tournament built, with the top order showcasing the skills of Preston White, Jayden Coffin, Matt Schubert and Glen Batticciotto, but a total of 15 runs from the first three in the face of the Thunder’s attack had Batticciotto combining scoring and stability in his 36 from 38 faced, as the Snakes posed an inadequate 7/101 challenge.

Dom Taylor’s 2/9 from his four overs in the middle stymied any Snakes’ recovery, and the home side’s reply was made easier after Chris Wright’s usual aggressive start, and Lewis Waugh combined with Andy Kratzmann to ensure the target was reached without undue drama in just under 18 overs.

Waugh and opener Wright have been the backbone of the Thunder batting, and the former Gympie opener is enjoying the freedom lower down, anchoring Tewantin’s middle order with his 188 runs at 47.

Against Glasshouse later that night his unbeaten 65, plus 45 from Kratzmann, secured the 6/149 that was too much for a scrambling Glasshouse, who lapsed to 9/104 and demotion from the finals.

There was drama aplenty at Maroochydore, where the Swans and Caloundra fought out the highest scoring game in the competition’s seven seasons, with Maroochydore’s 8/174 falling short of the Lighthouses’ 3/189.

An opening partnership of 116 from Rod Gibbs (73) and David Hill (81) saw the return of two of Caloundra’s prodigal sons.

Hill, a Lighthouse promising junior, stepped aside in 2000, then returned twenty years later with some outings in the lower divisions.

Now the old aggression has returned, and at the other end Gibbs, who seemingly retired in 2016 with 21 centuries and 7,317 runs tucked away, has also answered the call.

A chase of 190 is a big call, and the task fell to Callum Stitt and Reid Anderson with their Sydney-or the- bush approach.

Having conceded 36 runs in his three opening overs, Anderson returned the favour, smashing half-a-dozen fours plus a six in his 20 ball 34.

At the other end Stitt went the distance in a lost cause, defiant to the end with a final ball straight six to bring up a wonderful 101 from 57 deliveries as the Swans closed their unsuccessful chase at 8/174.

Nambour beat Coolum in a game the Cutters needed to win, while the Sharks gave Caloundra a horrible fright in their afternoon encounter.

From 9/102 midway through the 17th over chasing 125, Corey Perren and Sam Brooks started the final over on 116, needing 10 runs for victory to make the Sharks’ honour board.

With two balls seemingly left in the match, and the board at 9/118, an unlikely pair of boundaries was needed.

Then three wides and a leg bye in Aiden Worth’s last over rewrote the script at 9/122, making a single delivery now decisive.

But the miracle was not to be, with the chase ending at 123.

A masterful unbeaten 78 from Josh Brady sentenced a despondent Glasshouse to a winless day, as the Gold, who reached the Rangers’ 3/157 with ten balls to spare, closed on 4 points from two wins, as did Nambour and Glasshouse.

This leaves Maroochydore, Caboolture and Caloundra, none of whom play each other in the final round, to battle for positions in the semi-finals on Net Run Rate, in the event they secure wins.

POINTS AFTER ROUND 6: Tewantin-Noosa 12, Maroochydore, Caboolture, Caloundra 8, Glasshouse, Nambour 4, Coolum 0.
