A major Sunshine Coast water park and resort developer — locked in a court battle with the council and a rival developer over a similar project — has responded to a new tourist park proposal planned to neighbour his own.

Mooloolaba developer Sanad Capital Pty Ltd launched an appeal against the Sunshine Coast Council and rival developer Surf Parks Australia after the council approved a surf park tourist attraction at the Glass House Mountains, about 20km north of Sanad Capital’s own water park and eco-resort project.

Judge Glen Cash said in court documents released in May the appeal would be dismissed in due course. At the time of publishing, the matter is ongoing.

Now, Sanad Capital’s managing director Bradley Sutherland has responded to a new proposal for a Discovery Parks tourist park development, earmarked to be developed on what is currently the Glenview Par 3 public golf course.

The property neighbours Sanad Capital’s own tourist park project, known as Actventure.

“Given the council gave us such a hard time on accommodation (and types), we will be watching with keen interest for sure,” Mr Sutherland said.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesman said all development applications are assessed thoroughly on their own merits and documents involved in this process can be publicly viewed on the council’s development portal.

The Discovery Parks proposal was lodged with the council on June 2, 2022.

The Discovery Parks proposal opened for community consultation on June 9, but developers G’Day Group claimed in a press release other high-profile tourism giants including Australia Zoo’s Terri Irwin, Aussie World, Visit Sunshine Coast and Big Kart Track had already offered letters in support of the project.

Mr Sutherland said Sanad Capital would be watching with interest for any future plans for a water park at Aussie World in Palmview.

A Discovery Parks company spokesman could not confirm if Sanad Capital Pty Ltd had weighed in too.

The developers described the proposed tourist park as a “new family-friendly” park featuring more than 340 tourist sites including cabins, glamping tents and both powered and unpowered campsites.

The proposed project also includes a pool, mini golf course, BMX track and splash park.

The G’Day Group spokesman said the design concept for the splash park, which appears to be a children’s water play park, had not been finalised, but it would be similar to that in Discovery Parks’ other locations.

G’Day Group chief investment officer Amanda Baldwin said the new park would be a perfect addition to the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland tourism precinct.

“With visitor nights to the Sunshine Coast expected to increase by more than four million over the next decade, our development will provide much needed accommodation infrastructure to support the region’s tourism growth,” Mrs Baldwin said.

She said the development will compliment existing and emerging tourism attractions including Sanad Capital’s Actventure Waterpark and its adjoining Invigorate Resort.

“As a company, we have significant experience of investing in communities across Australia’s regions to support visitation growth and increase destination appeal, which has a positive flow on effects for other local operators,” she said.

Sanad Capital’s development includes a waterpark and a 160-villa resort. Construction began as of April 26.

G’Day Group have more than 85 tourist park locations around Australia, 16 of which are already in Queensland.

The material change of use community consultation on the Discovery Parks proposal will close on July 4.
