Preparation for the Sunshine Coast’s planning scheme for 2046 has hit a snag after a draft was shipped off to the state in 2023.
Sunshine Coast Council’s draft for the new Planning Scheme, which will set a vision for the region in 2046, was sent to the Queensland Government in December, 2023 for a state interest review.
The state interest review involves the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Planning Meaghan Scanlon to view and approve the draft in order to ensure the region’s plans align with the state’s interest.
Council’s draft was sent off for approval almost two years after it underwent preliminary public consultation to receive community feedback in 2022.
It had been estimated at the time by council that official public consultation would start in late 2024.
A Sunshine Coast Council spokeswoman said it is now “unlikely” for consultation to commence until next year, subject to approval from Minister for Housing, Local Government and Planning Meaghan Scanlon.
The spokeswoman said council is continuing to engage with the state government to complete the review process.
“The state government has requested further information from council on the proposed Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme that was submitted for a state interest review,” she said.
Council is working to finalise a response to the request for further information.
A summary brochure was released by council following preliminary consultation, where 10 “hot planning topics” were outlined as priorities sought by the general Sunshine Coast community.
Amendments will be made following official public consultation and a new draft will be sent to the minister for a final review before it is formally implemented.
Following the amendments, the scheme must be given a final review by the minister before it is formally implemented for the Sunshine Coast.
Preliminary feedback had addressed climate change and preserving Sunshine Coast wildlife and environment as well as housing affordability.
