The husband and alleged murderer of beloved mother Vanessa Godfrey has had his charge put on hold as he undergoes assessments at a mental health treatment centre.
Jeffrey James Godfrey’s matter was mentioned in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Friday, May 6, 2022 where it was adjourned to August 19, 2022.
Solicitor Kylie Anderson said the 50-year-old Bli Bli man was in custody at “The Park” undergoing an assessment.
Ms Anderson said his domestic violence murder charge had been suspended under the Mental Health Act.
“He is in custody at The Park currently undergoing that assessment for the purpose of that suspension,” she said.
She said the matter could progress through the mental health court.
Police prosecutor Jeanette Grigoris said a partial brief of evidence had been provided to Mr Godfrey’s legal team in the days leading up to his court date.
Ms Godfrey’s body was found inside a Pelican Waters Resort room about 3.35pm on February 14, 2022.
Detective Inspector Dave Drinnen previously told the Daily the pair had failed to check out on Monday morning after staying at the resort for a social function over the weekend prompting a staff member to conduct a welfare check.
“When they undertook that, they found a female deceased on the bed in the room and there was another unconscious male in the room,” Detective Inspector Dave Drinnen said.
“It was physically obvious she was deceased, she was covered in blood and there were some wounds on her arm.”
A resident in the resort, who asked to not be named, told the daily on February 15 the couple had been holed up in their room on the fourth floor for two days since they’d checked in.
Neighbours said they heard people arguing and partying for two days in the room and at one stage they were singing love songs loudly to each other.
Ms Godfrey was legally married to her accused killer however had been living at a separate address.
The pair had children and at least one grandchild together.
Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin adjourned the matter to August 19.
