Sunshine Motorway crash: Coolum boy, 3, dies in hospital after horror smash

A three-year-old Coolum boy has tragically died after a horror head-on crash on the Sunshine Motorway in peak school-hour traffic, that injured six others.

A three-year-old boy has tragically died following a horror head-on crash that injured six others near Coolum on Monday.

A Queensland Police spokesman confirmed the young boy from Coolum passed away from critical injuries after he was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital following the crash at 2.15pm on the Sunshine Motorway on Monday, May 30, 2022.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Yandina-Coolum Rd following the serious crash involving four children and three adults.

Police said initial investigations suggested a silver Mitsubishi Pajero was travelling southbound on the motorway when it collided with a Mazda CX-9 heading north.

The toddler was a passenger in the Mitsubishi Pajero.

He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries.

Six other people involved in the crash were taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The driver of the Pajero, a 36-year-old man, and a three-year-old girl were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman confirmed the man has since been released from hospital.

The girl, who was also a passenger alongside the three-year-old boy in the Pajero, remains in a stable condition.

The 38-year-old female driver of the Mazda and two children, aged 12 and four, were also taken to hospital for further medical treatment for minor injuries.

Part of the Sunshine Motorway was closed for several hours as the Forensic Crash Unit attended the scene.

Police have asked for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have dashcam vision to come forward.

A Police spokesman confirmed the boy’s next of kin had been advised of his death.
