A MAN who swam across the Sunshine Plaza river naked and tried to race a car on foot has faced court.

Timothy Ian Matthews, 36,  had been partying on Ocean St before he decided to take a dip at the Maroochydore shopping precinct at about 3am on August 2.

A security guard saw Matthews take off his clothes and swim across the river near Horton Pde before running in and out of traffic naked.

"The defendant then swam across to the southern side of the river again and as he came out of the river he tried to race a car on foot," police prosecutor Leonie Scott said.

"At the time police approached he had his genitals out and exposed to the public as he tried to put his clothes back on."

Matthews admitted his behaviour to police and was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to public nuisance at Maroochydore Magistrates Court today and chose not to offer an explanation when addressed by Magistrate Rod Madsen.

Mr Madsen gave Matthews a $600 fine and the conviction was recorded.
