James Daniel Dron’s bail refused after Maroochydore drug bust

The dad of a Sunshine Coast man allegedly found with meth and $14,000 has desperately offered $10,000 to see his son released.

Ice age: Moment police bust 'multi-tiered' drug syndicate

A Maroochydore man, whose father offered a $10,000 assurity, has failed to convince a magistrate to grant him bail after he was allegedly found with 47g of meth and more than $14,000.

Daniel James Dron applied for bail in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday after he was charged with seven offences including possessing a schedule one drug in quantity of or exceeding schedule three.

The court heard police allegedly found 47g of methamphetamine and $14,950 at Mr Dron’s Maroochy River address on January 29.

Police prosecutor David Hoffman said the seriousness of the charges meant if found guilty Mr Dron would likely receive a term of imprisonment and objected to his bail application.

“It would be highly unlikely he would spend too much time in custody,” he said.

Senior Constable Hoffman said Mr Dron continued to offend in custody when he failed to give police his phone pin code on Wednesday.

“He attempted many patterns on the Telstra phone before saying he couldn't remember,” he said.

Constable Hoffman said police had suspicions Mr Dron was using the phone to sell meth.

“If he is released there is quite a risk of him accessing another device, accessing and downloading the applications (allegedly) used during the offending (leading to) … the destruction of evidence before the court,” he said.

He said Mr Dron’s proposed bail address was home to a drug offender and was not suitable.

Solicitor Bernard Bradley agreed there was a “flavour of commerciality” to the alleged offending but said Mr Dron had not been charged with supplying or trafficking the dangerous drugs.

Mr Bradley said Mr Dron’s dad had offered a $10,000 assurity should his son be released.

He said there could be significant delays until Mr Dron’s matters could be dealt with in the Supreme Court.

“His detention in custody pending his appearance in the Supreme Court is not justified in all the circumstances given the risks that can be ameliorated by stringent bail conditions,” he said.

Mr Bradley said Mr Dron had a good history of turning up to court when needed and suggested random drug testing and a curfew could be imposed.

Magistrate Rod Madsen said a probation report stated Mr Dron showed a resistance to substance abuse counselling and continually made bad decisions.

“He was clearly not compliant with that order which gives me the idea that he doesn't have the best attitude when it comes to his court obligations,” Mr Madsen said.

He described the allegations against Mr Dron as a “pretty strong case” and denied his bail.

The substance, alleged to be methamphetamine will be tested.

Mr Dron’s matters were adjourned for mention on April 1.
