A man who attempted to stab a police dog and smashed into a car while trying to escape capture said a violent fight with his brother had put him in a bad headspace.

Christopher John Adcock was sentenced to two years’ prison on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to 12 offences including dangerously operating a vehicle and attempting to injure a police dog in Rockhampton on March 12, 2021.

While being sentenced in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Tuesday Adcock said the string of offences stemmed from an alleged violent incident between him and his brother on March 11, 2021.

“That's how we always used to sort things out growing up, but I’d spent the last seven years in jail training everyday and when my brothers had an argument I hit him and that was it,” he said.

“There was no malice there.

“That's the reason I’m back in jail now and that's the reason all the other offences occurred because I was just in a real bad headspace after doing that to my brother.”

Court documents stated Adcock was wanted by police when he went on the crime spree that ended in him attempting to injure a police dog.

The document said police had found an abandoned white Toyota Camry linked to Adcock and launched a dog squad search in Rockhampton before they discovered the then 38-year-old behind a shed at 8:15pm.

“ … (Adcock) was in possession of a “Rambo” branded knife with a 23cm serrated edge blade which he used in an attempt to stab PD Griffin,” the court document said.

“ … (He) has narrowly missed PD Griffin as he lunged towards him with the knife.”

The document stated Adcock was bitten on the upper leg by the dog.

In court Adcock said he suffered significant injuries.

“I woke up to the dog on me and I spent three months in hospital, I almost lost my leg because of it,” he said.

The court documents showed police had previously spotted Adcock parked in the white Toyota Camry in a Keppel Sands' carpark at 7:30pm and asked him to get out of the car.

“The defendant reversed the vehicle into the police vehicle causing damage to the front,” the document stated.

“Police were still at … (Adcock’s) door trying to remove the defendant however (he) … accelerated over the kerb onto Roden St.”

The documents stated Adcock was later seen driving at excessive speeds through a red light in Rockhampton before he abandoned the car.

Adcock was also found in possession of weapons including a flick knife and a Manrikigusari.

During his sentence Magistrate Maxine Baldwin said she understood Adcock, who had entered an early plea of guilty, had struggled with childhood trauma, drugs and alcohol that had led him to a life of crime.

Ms Baldwin said he had a total disregard for the law and the safety of others.

“As you said you got (drove) to Rocky and didn't even know, I mean how dangerous it is that,” she said.

“You could have wiped out a family with young kids.”

She said the consideration of Adcock’s rehabilitation was difficult as he had unresolved district court matters and was “so far” from being released.

The two-year prison sentence will be added to the end of Adcock’s current prison term due to end in 2024.
