A drunken nuisance having a “rough trot” without his prized gold jewellery threatened to hit paramedics over the head with a wine bottle before trying to get into an ambulance they had sought shelter in.

Daniel Ivan Monckton was fined a total of $950 after he pleaded guilty to committing a public nuisance in the Duporth Ave precinct on February 15.

Monckton saw red when paramedics, there to help, woke him up from a drunken nap in a fire escape at 6.30pm.

“(He) … has become angry upon being disturbed and has verbally threatened the officers by stating he would wrap a bottle of wine around their heads,” Police prosecutor Rebecca Lambert said.

Senior Constable Lambert said the paramedics retreated and locked themselves in the ambulance when Monckton tried to get to the officers.

He walked down Duporth Ave before he was arrested and taken to the Maroochydore Watch House.

Monckton also pleaded guilty to having a small quantity of marijuana.

Constable Lambert said he had a history of drug and public nuisance offending and asked for community service and a probation order to be imposed.

Unrepresented, the homeless man said he was going through a “rough trot”.

“It’s pretty bad when you’re out on the streets, you’re homeless and your ex has got all your stuff,” he said.

“She’s got my gold chain and gold bracelet.”

Monckton said he had also been struggling to get accommodation through the Department of Housing.

He denied having any drug and alcohol addictions and said he didn’t need a probation order.

“I’ve learnt my lesson,” he said.

Magistrate Rod Madsen noted Monckton’s history and said he was running out of options and could be given a prison sentence in future.
