A Sunshine Coast aspiring businessman who “flung” a woman around by the hair has found solace in religion to help himself, a court has heard.

Cain Michael Lightbody, 21, appeared in Maroochydore District Court on May 27 and pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He was discharged of an identical charge.

Crown prosecutor Madalyn Olivero told the court the assault came after an occasion where the victim - a woman who was taking care of her son - said she didn’t appreciate a comment he had made.

She said Mr Lightbody had spat on the woman’s feet and later threw her belongings onto the ground.

When the woman attempted to leave, Mr Lightbody grabbed her hair whilst she was holding her son and “flung her around” causing the woman to fall to the floor, the court heard.

Ms Olivero said he kicked her twice to the back while she was down.

The woman spat, hit and slapped Mr Lightbody in retaliation and told him she was concerned for her child.

Judge Ken told the court Mr Lightbody then pinned the woman to the ground, knocking into her son in the process.

The court heard he immediately began to apologise to the child and then later left the scene when the woman said she’d call police.

She was taken to hospital for pain to her chest, hand, finger and bruise to her leg.

Defence lawyer Matthew Cooper told the court his client had found religion and began to exercise regularly which has helped him to remain calm.

Since the offence, he also completed the Men Choosing Change program and has been placed on a waiting list for another course.

Mr Cooper said his client is in the early stages of establishing his own marketing company and will seek employment to support his income in the meantime.

Mr Cooper handed an apology letter and several character references to the court.

Judge Barlow sentenced him to 12 months’ probation and no convictions were recorded.
