A young man who got “lucky” and brazenly took off with an $85,000 powerboat from a Sunshine Coast mechanic almost left empty-handed during the clumsy break-in.

A 27-year-old man who got “lucky” and took off with an $85,000 powerboat from a Sunshine Coast mechanic has been jailed over the brazen theft.
Brodie David Sanderson was supported by his family in the Maroochydore District Court on Tuesday, where details of the heist at a Kunda Park diesel mechanic were revealed.
Crown prosecutor Alex Stark told Maroochydore District Court Sanderson had broken into a Kunda Park diesel mechanic with another man early on October 2, 2021. This accomplice was never charged, Mr Stark said.
The duo used bolt cutters to open a locked gate to the property before trying to hook up several different trailers to the back of a four wheel drive, though most of them did not fit the car’s towbar.
The court was told Sanderson and his accomplice then got “lucky” when they found a trailer with a boat which did fit.
It had an estimated value of $85,000, the court was told. The entirety of the heist was caught on CCTV.
Sanderson and the accomplice were later found broken down north of Gympie six hours later, but without the boat. It was never found.
Sanderson was later undone when police arrested him for another matter in November 2021.
Barrister Bruce Peters said it was “a matter of luck” that his client managed to steal anything from the mechanic at all, given a trailer they originally intended to steal didn’t fit their towbar.
He told the court the heist was the result of his client’s meth addiction, which he later attended rehab for.
Sanders was now working as a subcontractor doing horizontal drilling, Mr Peters said, where all the employees are frequently drug tested.
Several character references were tendered to the court in support of Sanderson.
He pleaded guilty to one charge of breaking and entering to steal.
Judge Glen Cash noted the brazenness of the crime, saying “it’s not Ocean’s Eleven”.
Sanderson was sentenced to three years behind bars with a parole release date of December 12 2024.
Convictions were recorded.
