A young mother has spent a month behind bars after a feral chain of events which involved her stealing from BIG W, threatening to stab a security guard and attacking police officers trying to arrest her.
Isabella-Lilly Charlotte Coggan was hauled into custody after her violent showdown with police on June 21 while wanted on a warrant following a concerning incident at the Sunshine Plaza at Maroochydore a week earlier.
Coggan went to Big W and shopped for two hours before she made her way to the self-serve counters to pay for the $341.85 of the goods in her trolley.
She told staff there her phone died and claimed she was going to an ATM, however when she returned, she tried to push her trolley out of the shop.
The court was told Coggan ignored pleas by staff to not leave and pay for her goods, which prompted a call to security.
A security guard arrived and engaged in a back-and-forth argument with the 25-year-old outside the store and into a nearby elevator about her not paying.
Police prosecutor Allison Johnstone said Coggan was belligerent towards the man, yelling for him to get out of the elevator before she palmed him in the stomach to push him away.
The woman looked through her trolley and pulled a kitchen knife and tried to take the plastic cover off of it
“Get out of the f***ing elevator … get the f*** away from the door I’m going to stab you,” she yelled at the security guard.
Sergeant Johnstone said when the security guard stood back and phoned back to his colleagues “she pulled a knife”.
The police prosecutor explained the cover on the knife was not the hard plastic cover which needed to be cut.
When she was located again with a large bag, she continued to tell the security guard to “f*** off” and threw an item at him.
Coggan was wanted on a warrant and found by police a week later.
The court was told she resisted police, berated them, did not give officers her name before she kicked out at another policeman’s foot and threatened to assault them.
She was arrested and found with a small amount of liquid meth and a 12cm blade believed to the weapon used against the security guard.
Coggan also faced an unrelated wilful damage charge where she damaged a sign at the Commercial Hotel at Nambour in May.
She was charged with and pleaded guilty to 12 offences including two of common assault, and one of threats, assault police, entering a promise to commit an indictable offence and wilful damage.
Coggan faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court by video from custody on Friday after spending 34 days in custody.
Defence solicitor Tania Pizarro said Coggan’s mental health issues and drug use contributed to the ex-sushi shop manager’s offending, which involved a spiral into drug use to cope with trauma.
The solicitor said Coggan was remorseful and hoped to live a better life with her son.
Magistrate Raelene Ellis opted to try and rehabilitate Coggan due to her underlying issues and placed her on an 18-month probation order.
She was also placed on a suspended two-month jail sentence, which took into account the month she already served behind bars and had to pay back restitution to the Commercial Hotel and the Big W Sunshine Plaza.
