A young man sobbed in the dock of a Sunshine Coast courtroom on Monday after he was told he would spend at least the next year and a half in jail for stabbing a man in the front yard of his Tewantin home after a house party gone wrong.

Addison Mana Yendall, 20, turned to face his supporters in the public gallery behind him and immediately broke down in tears as his sentence was handed down.

The court was told Yendall had stabbed a man in the front yard of his Tewantin home early on January 8, after the man intervened in an argument between Yendall and a pregnant woman about 3.30am.

The man and a number of other guests were at the Tewantin home for a house-warming party, and had opted to stay the night after heavily drinking, the court was told.

The man and Yendall came to blows inside the house before the man suggested they fight outside, in an attempt to diffuse Yendall’s anger.

Crown prosecutor Rebecca Marks said once outside, Yendall and the man began brawling again, but Yendall was knocked to the ground.

She told the court Yendall retreated inside, only to return with a 15 to 20 cm bladed knife and said, “I’m going to stab you”.

Ms Marks said the pregnant woman stood between the two men in an effort to break the fight up, but was moved out of the way just as Yendall swung at the man with the weapon.

He cut the man across the chest and then stabbed him in the stomach, Ms Marks said, before fleeing the scene and leaving other guests to call the emergency services.

He eventually returned, covered in blood, and claimed he had chased the alleged stabber up the street after the ordeal, the court was told.

Ms Marks said the victim suffered a life threatening stab wound and was placed in an induced coma once in hospital.

Defence barrister Kelvin Pearson said his client had been diagnosed with ADHD and was medicated. He was employed as a plasterer.

Mr Pearson told the court the victim had left Yendall’s life when he was quite young and had only just started to reconnect with him.

Despite the incident, the court was told the victim still wanted to be part of Yendall’s life.

The court was told he pleaded guilty to one charge of grievous bodily harm (domestic violence offence) in August 2023.

He was sentenced to six years behind bars, with a parole eligibility date of March 9, 2025.

Convictions were recorded.
