A Sunshine Coast skydiving instructor was found with some questionable medicine by police after a drunken fight at the Golden Beach Tavern.

Australia's growing drug crisis

A Dicky Beach skydiving instructor had his meth stash uncovered inside a medication bottle after he was arrested by police following a drunken fight at the Golden Beach Tavern.

Andrew Raymond Grego had been at the pub’s gaming lounge about 9pm on March 19, 2022 when he was asked to leave for swearing and yelling.

Police prosecutor Stephen Potter told the court the 35-year-old Golden Beach man stayed and was involved in a fight shortly afterwards during which his mate was injured.

Caloundra Magistrates Court heard police arrived swiftly to respond to the fight with Grego crouched down next to his mate.

Sergeant Potter said police asked Grego multiple times to move but he refused and stood his ground before he was arrested.

When the 35-year-old was asked to provide his name he said “I do not engage in this contract”, the court was told.

Grego was searched by police and was found with 1g of meth concealed inside a medication bottle with his name on it.

Defence lawyer Neil Tobin said the skydiving instructor was drunk and had no prior history, saying the incident was out of character for him.

Magistrate Catherine Benson said Grego was a mature-aged man who behaved in an “incredibly immature fashion” towards police.

Grego pleaded guilty to public nuisance, failing to leave a licensed premises, obstructing police while adversely affected, contravening police and possessing drugs.

He was sentenced to 40 hours’ community service and fined $500.

No convictions were recorded.
