A Mooloolaba man’s carjacking rampage which involved stealing a vehicle from a breastfeeding mum was caused by a meth binge making him “extremely paranoid”, a court has heard.

Aaron John Robbie was told by Judge Gary Long in Maroochydore District Court on Monday his three day crime spree was “aimless, irrational” and “largely purposeless”, where he committed a flurry of armed robberies, car jackings and burglaries from August 31 to September 2, 2022.

Robbie pleaded guilty to more than 30 offences including multiple counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, robbery and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle on video link on remand.

The court heard Robbie’s spree involved breaking into homes, confronting residents for their car keys before unlawfully using multiple cars in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Among the offences, the prosecutor said Robbie threatened a woman with a knife before stealing her car, stole a surf ski at Mooloolaba and paddled out to a yacht, which he also stole and abandoned on the Mooloolah River, while also driving dangerously in Woombye.

On the morning of September 2, 2022 he abandoned another stolen car at Big Top Shopping Centre before he stole a hi vis yellow shirt and other clothes from K-Mart. The court heard Robbie walked to the Sunshine Plaza car park where a woman was breastfeeding her three week old baby in the back seat.

“I’d hop out of the car with your baby if I were you,” Robbie told the woman before he drove off with her vehicle.

He was later involved in a collision at Forest Glen before he began a police pursuit with an officer on a motorcycle.

This led to a bizarre car chase around Hibiscus Retirement Village in Sippy Downs caught on police body cam, where he drove into a dead end and was arrested. He has been in custody for 19 and a half months.

Defence barrister Simon Lewis said Robbie was “extremely paranoid” during his crime spree due to using meth.

Robbie has been in and out of jail for most of his adult life, the court heard.

Mr Lewis said Robbie turned to drugs due to a traumatic upbringing and was stuck in a cycle of using drugs, committing crimes and being imprisoned.

After his last stint in jail he was kicked out of a residential rehab and was back on the “drug rollercoaster”, according to his barrister.

The court heard Robbie completed courses for substance abuse and anger management in prison and wanted to assist his sick dad when he was released from custody.

Mr Lewis said the 37-year-old was perturbed by his offending, particularly on the breastfeeding mother.

Judge Gary Long told Robbie his behaviour on drugs in the community “cannot be tolerated”.

Robbie shook his head with disappointment as he was jailed for six years, with a parole eligibility date of April 22, 2027.

He was also disqualified from driving for five years.
