Riki Chambers refused bail after alleged skateboard, spitting attack at Nambour

A Sunshine Coast dad, who police allege unleashed with a skateboard in a “terrorising event” captured on CCTV, has made “one of the most hopeless” bail bids a Queensland magistrate has seen.

A young Nambour father will miss his son’s fifth birthday after he allegedly bashed someone with a skateboard before spitting on them.

Magistrate Rod Madsen told Riki Chambers he made one of the “most hopeless” bail applications in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Thursday after instructing duty lawyer Katie Paterson to apply for his release, despite his history and alleged failures to appear in court.

The 24-year-old faces 18 charges including three of stealing, assaulting while armed, common assault and enter premises with intent, with police prosecutor Mel Pyke objecting to Chambers’ bail due to a “high risk” of similar offending.

The court heard the Nambour man’s latest alleged assault on March 30 at the Royal George Hotel at Nambour involved Chambers on an allegedly “violent rampage”.

In reading out the bail objection affidavit, Mr Madsen said Chambers was allegedly seen on CCTV “attacking the victim with a skateboard”, causing a cut to their head before he was “entangled” in a wrestle.

Mr Madsen said the person was allegedly “violently attacked” by Chambers who had multiple opportunities to stop but didn’t.

The magistrate said police alleged the Nambour father came back to further attack the victim before bystanders came to their assistance.

“A terrorising event, occurring in broad daylight in civilised society,” he said.

The court heard after Chambers allegedly injured the victim and spat in their face before he returned and damaged a window of the hotel with a skateboard.

Ms Paterson said she was instructed to apply for Chambers bail despite him not having a suitable address approved by police if released from custody.

The defence lawyer said the 24-year-old was suitable for the drug program court link, could report daily to police and adhere to a curfew.

She told the court Chambers hoped to make bail so he could attend his son’s fifth birthday.

Sergeant Pyke told the court Chambers’ criminal history highlighted more violence, which was similar to the alleged attacks in March.

Mr Madsen said Chambers had significant mental health problems for which he was not medicated and cited a strong prosecution case against him.

Chambers’ bail was refused, and his case adjourned to June 6.

“Is there a chance I’ll get out on the 6th of June?” Chambers asked Mr Madsen.

“No, your bail is refused,” Mr Madsen replied.
