A Coolum Beach couple has taken the next step with their multimillion-dollar business that’s garnered an international cult following for their sustainable products.
Sandra Lea and Andrew Murray, 36, launched their brand Luxey in 2020 promoting a sustainable and portable coffee cup named Luxey Cup made of glass and plastic-free sealing silicon.
Ms Murray said their brand had since achieved an online following of which many have become “collectors” of their products, meaning the brand’s new colour launches - often inspired by pop culture - will quickly sell out.
The couple have now debuted their Luxey Bowl for on-the-go lunches and established a kickstarter to launch their newest products.
Their stainless steel cup - which was a first of its kind boasting a silicon lid rather than a plastic one - has become their best selling product, Ms Murray said.
The couple spent every cent, maxed out every credit card, sold belongings and asked their family to fund their first prototype.
After their Kickstarter helped fund the official launch, the brand would go on to sell out for about two years straight.
They now have their own warehouse and staff in Coolum Beach.
Prior to the launch, Mr Murray worked as a surveyor and Ms Murray ran her own e-commerce business selling earrings.
Ms Murray said they had been desperate to find an original business idea which made an impact and were tired of seeing generic products and businesses based solely off money.
One day, she pitched the idea of a reusable coffee cup and Mr Murray designed it free of any plastic threads, leaks or heat expansion effects that afternoon.
The business has since grown to rake in several million dollars in revenue, Ms Murray said.
The couple’s vision for the business is to simply be Australia’s favourite cup, she said.
“I always had that vision and I really believe in that,” Ms Murray said.
Since Luxey Cup launched, she and Mr Murray established a second zero waste brand named Peekapoo, selling toilet paper wrapped in sustainable packaging down to every single piece of tape.
Ms Murray advised to start a successful business, you have to “work really hard” and have an original product.
She contributed their success to “not being a follower”, listening to their intuitions and pushing to produce a product different to anything else on the market.
Ms Murray said out of everything, she has become most proud of the following and community the brand has developed.
“We feel like we’ve got the most loved and loyal and fierce following on the internet,” she said.
Watching her business grow, scale and making improvements has been a great joy for Ms Murray, she said.
The couple have lived together on the Sunshine Coast for many years after meeting on Mt Coolum.
