After more than a decade at the helm, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the region is in great shape and well placed to host Olympic events in 2032.

In delivering his final State of Our Region address at Sunshine Coast City Hall, Mr Jamieson said he is pleased his lasting legacy will be the benefits the region receives from the delivery of the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics Games.

“I’m very proud that we won the games, it’s not about Brisbane, it’s about a much broader audience, and that includes the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“We’ve got eight Olympic events and two Paralympic events to be staged here on the Sunshine Coast - we’ll also have an athlete’s village near the city centre of Maroochydore.

“I think the Sunshine Coast is very well placed because of the work that’s gone in - it’s always good to leave a positive legacy for our region.”

As the region gears up for the event with the delivery of vital infrastructure projects, Mr Jamieson said his successor as mayor will need to be “a good manager of money”.

“You need to remember you’re running a really big business,” he said.

“I think a lot of people overlook that and the dividend from that business back to its shareholders who are our residents, is a quality of investment that goes on the delivery of projects.

“Whoever the next mayor is needs to be a good manager of money and know how to use money to get better outcomes.”

In addition to helping secure the Olympics, Mr Jamieson said his other achievements included the delivery of major projects such as the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport, international broadband submarine cable, and the new Maroochydore CBD.

“There is little doubt that the council I have had the pleasure of leading has achieved some really, truly history, and groundbreaking milestones for our region,” he said.

“Our region has a much stronger economy, with a clear blueprint for its future, generating investment and opportunities to help keep people employed.

“We’ve seen transformational investment in infrastructure that will truly set the Sunshine Coast up for the future - I think the region is in great shape.”
