A man is in a Sunshine Coast hospital following an offshore chopper rescue from a bulk carrier.

The Bundaberg-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew winched a man from the deck of a bulk carrier about 40 nautical miles east of Noosa.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority tasked the rescue chopper about 4pm yesterday, December 4.

A member of the ship’s crew, a man in his 60s, was reportedly suffering from a medical condition.

A critical care doctor and flight paramedic were separately lowered to the vessel to provide treatment.

They secured the patient into a stretcher.

The medical team and patient were then winched back into the helicopter.

The man was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for further treatment.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said paramedics received a call for help about 2.35pm and the man was in a stable condition when he was flown to the hospital.

An Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman said it was alerted someone needed evacuation and medical attention by the Japanese bulk carrier Shin Sekiyo about 2.30pm, Monday.

“AMSA coordinated the medevac, which was completed over the following four hours,” she said.

“AMSA plays a critical role in coordinating medical evacuations in Australia’s search and rescue region. When notified of the need for a potential medevac, AMSA will contact its contracted telemedical service for expert clinical advice.”
