Emergency crews have battled a car blaze that brought a major motorway to a near standstill during peak hour.

Coolum Beach car fire

A spectacular car blaze has caused peak-hour chaos on a major Sunshine Coast thoroughfare.

Emergency crews were called to the Sunshine Mwy near the Coolum-Yandina Rd turn-off on Wednesday afternoon to reports a car was on fire.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said fireys found a car in the southbound lane “completely involved in fire” about 4.30pm.

“(The car) blocked both lanes of the motorway, and the fire was contained at 4.34pm and completely extinguished about 4.55pm,” she said.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the fire appeared to start in the engine bay.

The car has since been towed, and the southbound lanes were open as of 5.23pm.

Police confirmed there was no suspicion that the car was stolen.
