Kenilworth Bakery announces free doughnuts at Bribie Island shop opening

The iconic Kenilworth Bakery - known for its luxe doughnuts and 1kg pastries - is opening its third store this week with a huge turnout expected. OPENING DETAILS HERE

Cult Qld bakery brings iconic doughnuts closer to Brisbane

A beloved Sunshine Coast hinterland bakery, known for its doughnuts and with a cult-like following, will be giving out free doughnuts at the opening of an exciting new shopfront closer to Brisbane.

Kenilworth Bakery, which opened nearly 100 years ago in 1924, has secured its place as a tourist destination while also developing a cult-like following among Sunshine Coast locals.

Known for its 1kg doughnut challenge, 1kg sausage roll, coffee in a doughnut, and small town country charm – the bakery almost always has a line out its doors.

In early 2022, the bakery opened its second venue at The Wharf Mooloolaba.

Now, it is opening a third shopfront at Bribie Island on Friday, December 15 at 8am.

Brother and sister duo Jenna and Nathan Sanders will throw open the doors at 3 First Ave, Bongaree, a beachfront site near the jetty.

In a launch day celebration that will start at 8am, the bakery will give away free doughnuts, while customers will also be able to buy their Kenilworth favourites.

The store will shut for the day once the display cases are empty.

According to Ms Sanders, Bribie was the obvious next location for expansion, after their original Kenilworth location and a second thriving site at The Wharf in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.

“Our bakeries aren’t just a place to grab a pie or sausage roll, they’re a destination in their own right – a place people actually have on their South East Queensland bucket list to visit,” she said.

“It’s a place where kids spend forever debating which flavour (or two) of doughnut they want, where adults savour that first bite into a crispy, chunky meat pie and where caffeine lovers sip from our unique coffee doughnuts.

“With this in mind, it made perfect sense to look to Bribie for our latest store, given its popular appeal as a holiday and daytrip location.

“It’s also moving that little bit closer to Brisbane, where we have a dedicated fan base.”

The bakery, with a heritage stretching back almost 100 years, has carved out a cult following with goodies that capture attention in the most modern of ways, such as the 8.2 million-plus views its spectacular coffee doughnuts have racked up on Instagram alone.

But the contemporary appeal is enhanced by a classic focus on good old-fashioned quality and taste.

All of Kenilworth’s products are made fresh each day, using recipes that have been developed and honed by the Sanders family across three generations of bakers. These are enhanced by the ever-evolving nature of their creations, including incredible sourdough doughnuts which are made from the bakery’s own starter.

An in-house butcher also oversees the quality of ingredients used in products such as pies.

“When people think of Kenilworth Bakery, they often think of our Insta-famous 1kg doughnuts, which we famously dare people to eat on their own,” Jenna explains.

“But they quickly realise it’s much easier said than done, with only about 5 per cent of people able to finish.”

The Bribie Island site will also have the bakery’s famous 1kg sausage rolls, doughnut flavours ranging from Gaytime and Beesting to Custard & Cream – which helped it claim the award for Queensland’s best doughnuts – and its award-winning pies.

Contemporary offerings across sweet and savoury will extend to the likes of plant-based and gluten-free products, and a special dog menu including dogaccinnos, doggie biscuits and doggie doughnuts.

There’ll also be sourdough bread baked onsite, courtesy of a specially imported machine that will keep the sourdough starter alive.

The bakery will be overseen by regional manager Terri-Ann Nielsen and will initially open Wednesday to Sunday from 8am-3pm.
