THE version that murder accused Richard Coburn gave police about arriving home just after the third State of Origin game in 2010 came unravelled on the third day of his trial.
Mr Coburn told friends he became the "number one suspect" when barmaid Justine Jones went missing that July 7 because he was the last one seen at her Alexandra Headland apartment with her.
He told police he got home about 10.30-11pm, just after the game had finished, and that Ms Jones was dressed to go out when he left her.
Mr Coburn's sister Amanda Coburn told Brisbane Supreme Court that she woke up about midnight to her brother phoning to ask for a lift home to their Sippy Downs home and saw that he had tried to call about half an hour earlier.
She said she told him she was in bed and had been drinking, so probably she should not drive, but she would leave $20 on the kitchen bench to help pay for a cab.
Kane Healey, a friend of Amanda's boyfriend, told the court he went to sleep on the couch about midnight and woke about 2.30am to see Mr Coburn coming through the front door.
He said he saw bright lights shining in, which he presumed were from a taxi, and watched Mr Coburn collect something from the bench before exiting again.
Mr Healey said Mr Coburn then returned inside before going to bed.
Taxi records showed Mr Coburn tried to phone a cab several times about midnight and then again about 2.30am when he finally got through.
The court heard a taxi driver drove a man similar to Mr Coburn's appearance to the house where he lived with his sister about 2.30am.
Mr Coburn told his sister he had been with mates but could not stay there because they had to return to Roma for work.
Those mates told the court they were in Roma for the Origin match and did not see Mr Coburn that night.
"He didn't want to tell me where he was because I didn't like Justine and he didn't want to disappoint me," Ms Coburn told the court.
The trial continues on Monday.
Apology: An earlier version of this story named Mr Healey as Jake Heaney, which was incorrect. APN Newsdesk apologises unreservedly to Mr Heaney for any distress this caused.
