A 23-year-old Sunshine Coast man who went on a drunken, naked rampage at a strict Indonesian Muslim province and seriously injured a local fisherman has reportedly had his detention extended.
Bodhi Risby-Jones has been detained in Aceh since April 27 after the incident, which left a local fisherman in hospital with serious leg injuries and Mr Risby-Jones facing up to five years’ jail and 40 strokes of the cane if convicted.
No charges have been laid.
Mr Risby-Jones was originally detained for 20 days following the incident while police filed a report for local prosecutors, but the ABC is reporting that period has now been extended until early June and if police need more time, he could be kept in custody for longer.
The Courier Mail previously reported Mr Risby-Jones was on a surfing holiday on the island of Simeulue, off Sumatra, when the incident happened.
He allegedly ran naked and drunk through the village, screaming and bashing into a local coffee shop before trying to take a motorbike and throwing it at local fisherman Edi Ron, who suffered a serious leg injury and needed 50 stitches.
Mr Risby-Jones later made a public apology for his actions while being paraded by police.
He admitted to attacking Mr Ron but claimed he only had one shot of vodka and denied he was naked, claiming he was wearing underwear.
Sharia law is strictly enforced in Aceh and alcohol is banned.
In a statement to the Courier Mail, following the arrest, Bodhi’s father, Ben Risby-Jones said his son was “extremely remorseful and apologetic and acknowledges the pain he has caused the victim, Mr Edi Ron, and his family”.
“He further acknowledges the waste of resources his actions have caused the Simeulue Police,” he said
“Bodhi is now fully aware of his behaviour on Thursday night and is disturbed by his actions and takes full responsibility for them.
“He also wants to apologise to the Australian people for embarrassing them and is deeply ashamed of the trauma and ongoing distress he has inflicted upon his family.”
According to the ABC, Mr Risby-Jones was reportedly asked to pay more than $60,000 in compensation to the fisherman, but his family and lawyer are reportedly still trying to reach an agreement with Mr Ron’s family.
It reported Mr Ron had left hospital to recover at home, though his condition has worsened and there are fears his foot will be amputated.
If an agreement is reached, police are reportedly prepared to release Mr Risby-Jones from custody and deport him back to Australia.
A Foreign Affairs spokesperson said The Australian Embassy in Jakarta was providing consular assistance to Mr Risby-Jones, but could not comment further due to privacy obligations.
Mr Risby-Jones’ family has been contacted for comment.
