A Noosa man accused of a naked and drunken rampage in Indonesia’s strictest Muslim province has been paraded by police in an orange prison jumpsuit and black balaclava, saying he is “very, very sorry”.
Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, 23, has been detained in Aceh since the incident on Thursday which left a local fisherman in hospital with serious leg injuries and Risby-Jones facing up to five years’ jail and 40 strokes of the cane, although no charges have been laid.
Mr Risby-Jones has reportedly been asked to pay more than $60,000 in compensation to fisherman Edi Ron who suffered a broken ankle and needed 50 stitches after allegedly being knocked off his motorbike by Risby-Jones.
He was on a surfing holiday on the island of Simeulue, off Sumatra, when the incident happened.
At a media conference on Saturday, local police paraded a cuffed Risby-Jones who apologised for his behaviour.
“I’m very, very sorry for my actions and the embarrassment I’ve caused,” he told media. No charges have been laid.
Police also showed off the bottle of vodka Risby-Jones had been drinking from before the alleged assault.
Sharia law is strictly enforced in Aceh and alcohol is banned.
“I actually don’t usually drink that much at home,” he told the media conference.
“If I do drink though, it would be beer.”
Risby-Jones and his family have already paid more than $2000 to Mr Ron’s family but they are reportedly demanding 600 million rupiah, or more than A$60,000, in compensation.
His lawyers are reportedly hoping to negotiate a settlement that would see him deported without charge.
