Mansfield was busted on the afternoon of August 4 on the New England Highway, at Alora after being intercepted by police.

A roadside drug test of the cabinet maker returned a positive reading to cannabis.

In Warwick Magistrates Court Mansfield told the magistrate he was originally from Melbourne, and was an ex-ice user who had struggling with addiction for 15 years. He said he was prescribed medical cannabis for back pain.

He snapped at the magistrate and said it was “stupid crazy that the government is giving (marijuana) out, what sort of joke is that”.

“I suppose they have to keep the courts in business,” he said.

“It’s silly you can get done for (drug driving) the next day after smoking it the night before.”

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the man “he could not blame the government for that”.

“You will need to find another way to treat your pain if you want to keep your licence,” Ms Sturgess said.

Mansfield was suspended from driving for three months, and received a $500 fine.

Convictions were recorded.
