Cherbourg State School students received an exciting delivery last week, with members of the Queensland Youth Orchestra popping by with trombones, clarinets and trumpets.
The second hand instruments were donated by people from the Brisbane music community and gifted to the school on March 12, 2025.
The donations were part of an initiative established by First Nations musician Nina Korbe together with Cherbourg State School principal Boyd McLean to encourage student engagement with western classical music.

Ms Korbe, who is an artist in residence with the orchestra and an award-winning soprano, said she formed a deep connection with the school after performing for the students in 2023 while on tour with the orchestra.
Her family connections with the community go back many generations, with her great-great grandparents and great grandparents proud community leaders in Cherbourg.
“A vision of this project and the relationships fostered between schools and our musical institutions allow for greater access and enrichment for First Nations students through music and I particularly look forward to watching the instrumental program at Cherbourg State School flourish,” she said.
With the latest visit, the program has now donated a total of 22 instruments.
