Police declare public emergency after man barricades himself in home with weapons

The Kingaroy man who is accused of carrying out a nine-hour siege with police has been charged with a raft of offences, including serious assault of police, wilful damage and drug charges.

Damien James Jurgensen, 26, allegedly barricaded himself inside a Doonkuna St home in the early hours of Monday while armed.

Police said they were attended the property to locate Mr Jurgensen over a return to prison warrant and other outstanding matters.

When officers attempted to arrest him, Jurgensen allegedly obstructed police and then barricaded himself in one of the residence’s bedrooms and armed himself with two machetes.

Police invoked an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act at 8:40am, with police negotiators and specialist police also deployed.

The 26-year-old surrendered to police and was taken into custody at about 3pm on Monday, close to nine hours after officers were first called to the street

Officers had the property surrounded for much of the day and attempted to negotiate with Mr Jurgensen for hours.

Special Emergency Response Teams arrived to support Kingaroy police crews just before 1pm, with witnesses reporting the officers aiming assault rifles at the house and readying a ballistic shield.

An onlooker said police had earlier tried to enter the property while armed with guns, but backed out a short time later.

Mr Jurgensen was on Tuesday charged with nine offences, including serious assault of police, wilful damage, common assault, and possessing dangerous drugs and utensils.

He faced Murgon Magistrates Court briefly Tuesday morning and did not apply for bail.

He was remanded in custody until his next appearance, which was set down for March 23.
