Police have released new details into the identity of two people whose bodies were found chained together in a dam north of Kingaroy.

The pair are believed to be a local man aged in his 50s and a local woman aged in her late-40s.

It is understood they were found tied together with a chain and both were heavily decomposed.

Detectives have seized a white 2004 Holden Commodore station wagon, which was parked in the picnic area of Gordonbrook Dam since February 22.

They are seeking help from anyone who may have seen the car in an effort trace the movements of the pair leading up to their deaths.

A kayaker first raised the alarm after spotting the bodies floating 5m from the shore of Gordonbrook Dam at about 3.30pm Saturday, with police swarming the area late into the night.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths are currently being treated as non-suspicious.

According to sources the pair have been in the water for weeks.

Police had last night taped off a section of path leading along the foreshore from the main recreational area and boat ramp.

South Burnett Regional Council CEO Mark Pitt said the council was only made aware of the find at about 9pm Saturday.

“At this time council is not on receipt of sufficient information to make a formal statement and we also recognise that it would not be appropriate,” he said.

But Mr Pitt said the level of water treatment at the dam, which is the town’s main water source, is “very strict.”

He said the drinking water, which is blended with water from Boondooma dam is “100 per cent safe.”

A post mortem on the bodies will be conducted in coming days.
