Goomeri, Booubyjan, Tansey, Lower Wonga, Wide Bay Hwy and Burnett Hwy drivers busted

Police in the western area of the Gympie region have released details about the many drivers who ignored flooded road and bridge closed signs to drive through floodwaters during the deadly February 2022 disaster.

Police from the western reaches of the Gympie region have revealed that at least 14 drivers disobeyed “No Entry” signs on flooded roads at the height of the region’s flood disaster.

Goomeri police detected 14 drivers disobeying these signs on Moore Street, Goomeri and the Burnett Highway, Tansey and Goomeri over three days from Friday, February 25, to Monday, February 28. IOn Kilkivan, a 59-year-old Sexton man, a 21-year-old Maleny man and a 76-year-old Kilkivan man were booked for doing the same thing on the Wide Bay Hwy at Lower Wonga.

People who ignore those signs can be fined $192 and stripped of three demerit points.

They also warned drivers to remember that speeding was a Fatal Five factor along with not wearing seat belts, drink/drug drive, fatigue and distraction.

A 21-year-old Walkervale man was fined $634 for driving at 134km/h in an 100km/h zone on the Burnett Highway at Booubyjan.

Five other drivers were detected exceeding the speed limit by at least 13km/h but not more than 20km/h, copping fines of $275 and losing three demerit points.

A further four drivers were detected exceeding the speed limit in speed zones by more than 20km/h but not more than 30km/h, copping fines of $459 and losing four demerit points.

At about 1.25pm on Sunday, February 20, police detected a vehicle travelling at 124km/h in a 100km/h speed zone on the Burnett Highway, Booubyjan. A 30-year-old Maroochydore man was fined $459 and lost four demerit points.

At about 8.26am on Thursday, March 3, police detected a vehicle travelling at 124km/h in a 100km/h speed zone on the Bunya Highway, Manyung. A 65-year-old Goomeri man was fined $459 and lost four demerit points.

At about 5.08pm on Saturday, March 5, police detected a vehicle travelling at 118km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Burnett Highway, Booubyjan. A 17-year-old Lagoon Pocket boy was fined $275 and lost three demerit points.

At about 6.59pm that same day, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 126km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Burnett Highway, Booubyjan. A 17-year-old Branyan boy was fined $459 and lost four demerit points.

At about 1.32pm on Tuesday, March 8, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 115km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Wide bay Highway, Kinbombi. A 18-year-old Chatsworth woman was fined $275 and lost three demerit points.

At about 1.40pm on Saturday, March 12, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 123km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Burnett Highway, Tansey. A 49-year-old Buderim man was fined $459 and lost four demerit points.

At about 9.55am on Wednesday, March 16, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 120km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Burnett Highway, Redgate. A 57-year-old Tansey man was fined $275 and lost three demerit points.

At about 6.15am on Thursday, March 17, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 120km/h in an 100km/h zone on the Wide Bay Highway, Goomeri. A 47-year-old Coondoo man was fined $275 and lost three demerit points.

In Kilkivan, police detected 16 drivers disobeying the speed limit in the past four weeks.

Four drivers were detected exceeding the speed limit in speed zone by more than 20km/h which incurs a fine of $459 and a loss of four demerit points.

  • At about 11.40am on Thursday, February 17, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 130km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Wide Bay Highway, Kilkivan. A 55-year-old Victoria man was charged. A 29-year-old Noosa Heads man was charged. A 63-year-old Bowenville man was charged. QP2200418843 refers.At about 11am on Tuesday, March 15, police will allege they detected a vehicle travelling at 121km/h in an 100km/h speed zone on the Wide Bay Highway, Woolooga.   • Eleven drivers were detected exceeding the speed limit in a speed zone by at least 13km/h but not more than 20km/h, which incurs a fine of $275 and a loss of three demerit points.

    One driver was detected exceeding speed limit in speed zone by less than 13km/h which incurs a $183 fine and loss of one demerit point.

    Police in the Kilkivan division detected three drivers disobeying “No Entry” signs, on the Wide Bay Highway, Lower Wonga on Saturday, February 26 and Sunday, February 27 while the significant weather event was occurring in the region.
